NBF Report 25 Jan 2009

The mid-season Newmarket Badminton Federation League Tables show an interesting picture with Cambridge Crossways and Haverhill topping all the Divisions between them. After struggling in the Menís and Mixed Leagues last season Newmarketís decline continues with the loss of some players ending their long-time supremacy of the Ladies Championship and they appear unlikely to mount any strong challenges this season. Newmarketís keen local rivals St. Phillips, however, are looking to make it four Menís championships in a row as they have games in hand over current leaders Crossways and have already beaten them 4-2 in a tough match. In the Mixed First Division the money is still on defending champions Ely Victoria who have already beaten current table toppers Haverhill 8-1 away with St. Phillips also likely to be in contention.

The Federation will be hosting their sixteenth consecutive International Badminton team tournament over the weekend of 14th and 15th Feb 2009.Ely Victoria will be looking to defend their title against other local players as well as entries from Birmingham, the Wirral (Cheshire) and Belgium. Each team will consist of two men and two women, playing Menís, Ladiesí and Mixed Doubles.†† The places in each group will be determined by the total points scored over a marathon weekend - play is from 9am to 7pm on the Saturday and 9am on Sunday to 4pm, at the Littleport Leisure Centre (for the seventh year) and spectators are most welcome.
